Assistant Teacher

Casie Newhouse began studying Ashtanga Yoga at the House of Yoga and Zen with Nancy Gilgoff in 1995, and has been assisting at the school since 1998. Casie has also studied with Nicky Doane and Eddie Monestini. When Nancy is away touring, Casie takes charge of the daily classes, something she enjoys, as she likes working with students in a classroom setting and on an individual basis.

When she isn't teaching, Casie can usually be found with her horses, because besides being a yoga teacher she also rides rodeo. She competes on a semi-professional level in steer roping and barrel racing. Casie lives and works on a real cattle ranch here on Maui.

Keiko Armstrong is from Osaka, Japan. She has lived on Maui since 1991, and was introduced to Ashtanga Yoga in December 2001. Since that time, she has studied with both Nancy Gilgoff and Casie. Keiko gained her certification in California at the Mount Madonna Center in 2005 and now teaches private lessons, in addition to assisting at the House of Yoga and Zen. It is Keiko‘s dream to help bring Ashtanga to Japan. She joined and assisted Nancy on her first trip to Japan in 2005 and has been her assistant there every year since. In 2007 Keiko taught her first solo workshop in Japan, and she has continued to teach annual workshops there ever since.

Vanessa Gilgoff has been around Ashtanga Yoga all of her life. She was raised in Maui, Hawaii, surrounded by people who were very passionate about Ashtanga Yoga, she was practically doing yoga in the womb! Her teaching style is very traditional and is the way that Pattabhi Jois originally taught her mother in 1973.

Vanessa is very fortunate to have always considered Pattabhi Jois her grandfather, growing up with him as a constant presence in her life. For the past 10 years she has been dedicated to the practice, and for the past six years she has been teaching all over the world, assisting her mother, Nancy Gilgoff, in workshops and bringing her own flavor and fun to these classes. Two years ago, she began assisting in the daily classes on Maui in the winters as well. She has been to Mysore, India, numerous times, and has always enjoyed a close relationship with the Jois family.  Vanessa brings her own style into the yoga room and her classes are serious but also filled with lots of laughter.
